Ugly Beauty
by Alan Forrest Smith In the third row of a store near where I live there is an aisle that is always packed with young ladies. Young ones, old ones and middle ones. Ugly ladies, gorgeous ones. They are all there. Have you ever seen or heard of ugly beauty? Well in the store near me, in the third aisle as you walk in you can see literally dozens of ladies hanging out, looking at stuff and putting stuff in their baskets to buy. Gorgeous looking ladies, ugly looking ladies, young ones, older ones, hundreds of them. And above their head is a sign that's not only said beauty but also said the word HEALTH. This intrigued me. So I walked up the aisle amongst the ladies - which of course I enjoyed - just to see where the health stuff was and what was it. It turns out in the health section of this place it was skin, hair and make-up? Now tell me if I am wrong here but is that HEALTH? You see what we are saying to our women is health is a look. Health is external. Health is replaceable. When the reality is health once lost can sometime never be regained. As adults we have a huge responsibility to make sure our young ones understand that. As marketing people we have a huge responsibility to the public. Yet I wonder, I just wonder if that is why we have a hugely destructive attitude to life right now for young women. Live life in the very fast lane. Drink as much alcohol as humanly possible. Sleep with and have sex with anyone whenever you can. Life is for pleasure only. But is it? Is life for pleasure only? Where is the health in that? Think about this. We look forward to pleasure right? So to have pleasure we must experience the opposite. But if we are in constant state of pleasure how do we know when things are really pleasurable anymore? We can't so we become abusive of ourselves. The damage can be extreme. Venereal disease on a massive scale as never seen before. Liver failure being reported in number that are freaking surgeons out! Young women dying, becoming infertile and losing their love for life because we are teaching them ... health is external, it can be renewed, repaired and made better. As a nation, community, world we should be ashamed and of the way we treat women as throw away commodities to be sold to and feed utter garbage about health can be simply bought from a shelf and topped up when it's low. Honestly ... this was just an observation. I feel strongly about it. I wanted to share the moment. Remember I love your comments when they come in.
